Update on International Student Visa in Australia (Effective July 1, 2024)
Australia has always been a popular destination for international students, offering world-class education and a vibrant multicultural environment. As of July 1, 2024, there are several important updates to the international student visa policies that prospective students should be aware of. These changes are part of the Australian Government’s ongoing efforts to enhance the integrity and quality of its international education programs.
Key Changes to International Student Visas
Financial Capacity Requirement
From May 10, 2024, the financial requirement for Student and Student Guardian visas has been set at AUD 29,710 for an individual student. This ensures that students have sufficient funds to support themselves during their stay in Australia1.
Reinstatement of TOEFL iBT
TOEFL iBT is once again accepted for student visa purposes. However, tests taken between July 26, 2023, and May 4, 2024, are not valid. Tests taken before July 26, 2023, remain valid for two years1.
New Genuine Student (GS) Requirement
Updated English Language Requirements
From March 23, 2024, new English language requirements apply to all Student Visa and Temporary Graduate Visa applications. This aims to ensure that students have the necessary language skills to succeed in their studies1.
Changes to Temporary Graduate Visa
The length of post-study work visas will be reduced. However, the Temporary Graduate visa will still allow graduates to gain valuable work experience and demonstrate their skills to Australian employers. Graduates who secure skilled jobs during their post-study work period may be eligible for the new 4-year Skills in Demand visa, providing a clearer pathway to permanent residency1.
New Age Limit for Temporary Graduate Visa
The maximum eligible age for Temporary Graduate visa applicants will be reduced to 35 years. However, Masters (research) and doctoral degree (PhD) graduates will continue to be eligible if they are under 50 years of age2.
Restrictions on Onshore Student Visa Applications
Starting July 1, 2024, holders of certain visas, including Visitor and Temporary Graduate visas, will no longer be able to apply for Student visas while in Australia. Students with a genuine intention to pursue studies will need to apply for their Student visa from offshore3.
Implications for International Students
These changes are designed to strengthen the integrity of Australia’s visa system and ensure that international students are well-prepared for their studies. Prospective students should carefully review these updates and plan accordingly to meet the new requirements.
Financial Preparation: Ensure you have the necessary funds to meet the new financial capacity requirement.
Language Proficiency: Prepare for and take the accepted English language tests, keeping in mind the validity periods.
Visa Application Timing: Plan your visa application process, especially if you are currently in Australia on a different visa.
Career Planning: Take advantage of the post-study work opportunities to gain experience and potentially secure a pathway to permanent residency.
By staying informed and prepared, international students can continue to enjoy the benefits of studying in Australia while navigating the updated visa requirements.
